Blowing the Whistle

The life of a GAA referee

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Over the last number of years, GAA referees have been at the receiving end of constant criticism from both the public and the media. Very often their decisions on the playing fields have caused outrage, and it's not uncommon for referees to fall victim to physical attacks during or after critical games. To many it is a mystery as to why anyone would want to do this thankless job. "Blowing the Whistle" is an absorbing human interest documentary, which looks into the highs and lows of life as a GAA referee. The programme follows Pat McEnaney, a salesman from Monaghan and Michael Curley, a Garda Superintendent from Galway, two of Ireland's top Gaelic Football referees. We travel with them as they take charge of some of the biggest sporting events in the Irish calendar.
